Luka Doncic believes the Los Angeles Lakers have plenty more to offer after beginning their new NBA campaign with a 127-105 win over the Golden State Warriors.

The Slovenian star scored a game-high 28 points, adding eight rebounds and seven assists, as the Lakers made an impressive start to their first season with Doncic leading the franchise following LeBron James’ departure.

New signing Walker Kessler also enjoyed a remarkable debut, scoring 26 points without missing a single field goal attempt.

Before tip-off, Doncic promised supporters a “special season” as Los Angeles began a new era with the 27-year-old as their main man.

He wasted little time making an impact, combining with Kessler for an alley-oop dunk on the Lakers’ opening possession.

“It’s a lot of honor to be the face of the franchise,” Doncic said after the game.

“That’s just the first game. I think our ceiling is even higher.

The Lakers continued to dominate after half-time, with Austin Reaves contributing 23 points and six assists.

Stephen Curry scored 23 points for Golden State, including 16 in the opening quarter, but the injury-hit Warriors struggled to contain the hosts.

Kessler makes Lakers history with flawless shooting display

Kessler’s debut was another major positive for Lakers coach JJ Redick.

The former Utah Jazz centre finished 12-for-12 from the field, becoming the first Lakers player since Wilt Chamberlain in 1969 to make at least 12 shots without a miss.

He also recorded 10 dunks, a feat no Lakers player had achieved since Shaquille O’Neal in 2003.

“When I was driving, [Kessler] stepped up,” Doncic explained.

“When I was doubled, he played in the pocket. Very impressive game from him.”

Kessler, who also registered nine rebounds and two blocks, credited his team-mates for making his introduction so straightforward.

“I’m extremely thankful playing with the guys we have on our team,” he said.

“Their court vision is insane. They know my advantage is my height. They found me in the right spots.”
