Preview for Arsenal v Everton

Arsenal came back from Munich with a point and a problem. Mikel Arteta’s side earned a hard-fought 2-2 draw at Bayern on Wednesday, but they lost Bukayo Saka inside the first 10 minutes, and with Manchester City still three points clear at the top, they host Everton on Saturday afternoon knowing that anything less than a win could see the gap grow.

There was plenty to like about the performance at the Allianz Arena. Harry Kane’s second-half penalty put Bayern in front, but Declan Rice equalised in the 82nd minute to send Arsenal home with a valuable point. Eberechi Eze, who was hooked at half-time at Nottingham Forest on Sunday, played a big part in the comeback, and his response will have pleased Arteta.

The champions have been criticised this season for being too boring, but that was the fifth time in seven games they had scored at least twice. Arsenal are now unbeaten in five games in all competitions, and they have won all three of their Premier League games at the Emirates so far.

Everton arrive in London after a disappointing afternoon against Chelsea at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, where Pedro Neto scored twice for the visitors in a 2-0 victory. David Moyes’s side are eighth, three points off the top four, and they have been very hard to beat on the road, drawing all three of their away league games. They are one of only four teams still unbeaten away from home in the Premier League this season.

They’ve been built on stubborn defending rather than goals, though, and they’ll need to be at their best to keep out Arsenal on Saturday.

The Premier League Table

  • Position 1, 2, 3, 4 : Promotion – Champions League (League phase)
  • Position 5 : Promotion – Europa League (League phase)
  • Position 18, 19, 20 : Relegation – Championship

Team News for Arsenal v Everton

Saka is the big concern with a quad injury. He is expected to miss this game, and the length of his absence is still unclear.

That means Eze is likely to return to the starting XI, with Noni Madueke switching to the right to replace Saka.

William Saliba (back) and Christos Tzolis (hamstring) are still out, but Martín Zubimendi is fit again. Piero Hincapié is back in light training after his ankle injury, and Arteta said there is an outside chance he could make the matchday squad.

Everton have no new concerns. Former Arsenal midfielder Christian Nørgaard made his debut against Chelsea after recovering from a groin injury and is likely to start.

Expected line-ups for Arsenal v Everton

Arsenal: Raya; Timber, Konsa, Gabriel, Calafiori; Rice, Guimarães; Madueke, Ødegaard, Eze; Havertz

Everton: Pickford; Maitland-Niles, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; Garner, Nørgaard; Johnson, Dewsbury-Hall, Grealish; Barry

Recent Form & Stats for Arsenal v Everton

  • Arsenal have won all three Premier League games at the Emirates this season
  • Arsenal have won their last six games at the Emirates in all competitions
  • Everton are winless in seven against the Gunners
  • Arsenal won the corresponding fixture last season 2-0 with Max Dowman’s effort making him the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history

Prediction for Arsenal v Everton

It’s unlikely to be a goal fest but we can’t see past a solid, and relatively routine, Arsenal win. Everton will sit back and try to make it difficult but the Gunners have too many good players.
