Pride of Britain host Carol Vorderman has opened up about her health scare, revealing chest pains left her fearful of a heart problem, prompting the star to make a difficult decision

Legendary television and radio presenter Carol Vorderman has built a successful career in the media over multiple decades, appearing on such stations as Channel 4 and LBC. However, in September 2024, she was hospitalised, causing her to dramatically reassess her health, fitness, and overall wellbeing.

September 2026 marked two years since the terrifying health ordeal, one which the former Countdown icon has now recovered from, but also something she has been incredibly frank about.

Recently Carol, 65, was seen hosting the Pride of Britain Awards with Diversity’s Ashley Banjo, but earlier this year opened up about what was happening away from the cameras.

The broadcaster told womanandhome she had been given some crucial advice given by her doctor following her admission to hospital.

She revealed that during a consultation with one medical professional, they warned her metaphorical fuel tank was running on empty.

Carol told the publication: “Becoming ill was a blessing because it reset things in my life. I hit burnout and ended up in hospital in September 2024.

“I had chest pains and thankfully my heart was fine, but doctors said I had nothing left in the tank, so I had to give up my LBC show. I was sad but thought, ‘Next time it could be my heart’.”

In the years since, Carol has changed her diet, her workload, and her exercise regime, posting photographs of some of her workouts online. Earlier this year, Women’s Health reported that Carol had started building strength as part of her regimen.

After Carol posted one photograph, she replied to one commenter about what her favourite exercise was, revealing her love for the Romanian deadlift. According to the publication, the move is a “compound exercise” that “targets your glutes, hamstrings and lower back, while also working your core and lats”.

It is this desire to build strength that Carol touched on in an interview with Good Housekeeping in which she talked about her ambition to remain active well into her seventies.

She remarked: “Healthwise, I’ve been on all sorts of drugs this last year and have had lots of muscle wastage, so I’m prioritising protein. I don’t want to be falling over when I’m 75.

“I have bone scans every year and full body MRIs – I want to keep fit and healthy and getting ill has made me think that if there’s anything going wrong, I want to know now.”

Carol is set to return to the UK’s screens in a televised screening of the Pride of Britain Awards tonight (October 22nd) at 8pm on ITV.
