Hyderabad: Police detained between 120 and 150 foreign medical graduates (FMGs) while they were protesting in front of the Director of Medical Education in Koti, as part of their fortnight-long agitation to press for an increase in stipends and parity with Indian-educated doctors. They were taken to Chikadpally, Dabeerpura and Malakpet police stations before being released.
Shashank, a foreign medical graduate, alleged that the protesters were brutally detained. Academic director of medical education Dr M. Rama Devi interacted with the FMGs, but they were not satisfied with the outcome, they said.
After giving intimation to the Directorate of Medical Education on September 23, the FMG doctors working in government general hospitals started their strike with protests at various places like Dharna Chowk, People’s Plaza and the TSMC office, etc., before Thursday’s sit-in. “After demanding a GO asking for equal stipend for FMG doctors as IMG doctors, the young doctors were brutally detained, with police using excessive force against protestors who resisted detention or were taking videos,” the FMG doctors alleged in a release.
“Instead of engaging in constructive dialogue, we are deeply concerned by threats from officials regarding the cancellation of our mandatory internship in government medical colleges,” the statement said. Telangana Senior Resident Doctors Association (TSRDA), Junior Doctors Association, Healthcare Reforms Doctors Association condemned the detention of FMG doctors.
