Tiruchy:Tension prevailed for a while when the police detained 252 farmers, four of them women, belonging to more than 50 different farmers associations, when they attempted to commence their relay fast, demanding to write-off the entire farm loan, near Samayapuram, in Tiruchy district, on Thursday.
A section of farmers held an agitation continuously for five days from September 15 for the same demand. Ministers Ramesh, Vinod and Gandhirajan held negotiations with the farmers and said since by-elections were on for Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly constituencies, they needed 20 days’ time to take a decision on their demand.
Accepting their plea, the farmers called off their strike. But even after one month, there was no announcement on the farm loan waiver, as promised by the ministers, said the farmers.
Following this, the same group of farmers attempted to commence their indefinite agitation at Pananthope at Sakthi Nagar, in Samayapuram, on Thursday.
As the farmers started to assemble, hundreds of police stopped them at Samayapuram four road junction and a private medical college near Samayapuram. When they attempted to detain the farmers, it led to heated arguments between the police and farmers.
However, the police forcibly detained 252 farmers, including the women, and kept them in three different marriage halls in and around Samayapuram.
In the meantime, tension ran high when a farmer attempted to commit suicide by hanging himself with his green towel, and another farmer, sitting down, tightly held onto the legs of the police personnel.
