'Sopranos' Star Max Casella Opens Up About His 'Insane' Medical Condition That Left Him Humiliated

Max Casella is one of the most well-known American actors. He is widely recognized for his roles as ‘Vinnie Delpino’ on ABC’s Doogie Howser, M.D., ‘Benny Fazio’ on HBO’s The Sopranos, ‘Julie Silver’ on HBO’s Vinyl, and ‘Leo D’Alessio’ on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire.

Alongside this, Max has several film credits to his name including Live by Night, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Live by Night, and The Confession, to name a few. However, many might not be aware that his acting career nearly came crashing down in his mid-20s due to a medical condition.

Max Casella opens up about his ‘insane’ medical condition

According to Max Casella, his acting career almost came to an end in his mid-20s owing to his growth hormone deficiency. Max, who is currently 59 years old, revealed that he did not go through puberty until he was 27, following medical intervention. At the Cinema Society screening of Jimmy, Max said that it was “insane.” He added that, given the cards he was dealt, he learned how to make the best of it.

While speaking with Page Six, Max confessed that his career “was pretty much dead” after he started experiencing the kind of awkward physical changes that most people go through when they are still teenagers. He said:

“I went through the awkward phase that most people go through in high school. I had to start all over again. It was a humiliating experience.”

Max Casella claimed that it was not easy for him to get used to his changing appearance. While explaining how he didn’t wear it well right away, he said, “You know what happens to especially boys when they go through puberty. They get awkward and zits and fat, chubby, whatever.”

Max Casella credited landing the role of ‘Timon’ in the original Broadway production of The Lion King for helping him get through the difficult phase in his life. He claimed that he would dance 8 times a week, and then he “completely became an adult.”

Max Casella previously called his health condition a ‘horror show’

In a 2022 interview with Page Six, Max shared more details about his pituitary dwarfism. He admitted that he was given testosterone and growth hormones and his body did not go through the change by itself. He explained:

“I have a malfunctioning pituitary gland from birth and basically had to jump-start my puberty by pumping me full of testosterone and growth hormones to get me to grow because it wasn’t happening. I was 25, and I hadn’t even shaved.”

Calling his condition “a horror show,” Max revealed that things were so bad that he couldn’t even talk about it, as nobody understood it. In his words:

“It’s like the trans community today talks about body dysmorphia and feeling like, ‘I’m in the wrong body,’ absolutely my experience. Absolutely. I was a man trapped in a little boy’s body throughout most of my 20s until they finally pumped me full of testosterone.”

Max Casella further revealed that his health condition made him struggle to book the kind of roles that he aspired to play. He said matter-of-factly that show business can step all over a person’s heart. Max opened up about how he used to play kids and prepubescent characters in his 20s. But once he grew out of that and grew into manhood, he had to start all over again. Unlike most people, it was not a smooth transition for him.
