Richard E. Grant has shared some rare Instagram pictures of him and his Star Wars co-star Carrie Fisher, who would have celebrated her 70th birthday on October 21
Richard E. Grant has paid a moving tribute to Carrie Fisher on what would have been her 70th birthday.
The 69-year-old actor posted a series of rare photos celebrating his Star Wars co-star, who passed away aged 60 in December 2016. Carrie would have turned 70 on Wednesday, October 21 and to mark the occasion, Richard posted some casual images of them, also featuring Carrie’s French bulldog, Gary, on Instagram.
In the caption, Richard reflected on his friend’s wit and humor – and he revealed that the photos were taken two months before Carrie passed away. Both actors appeared in the sci-fi franchise together, sharing the screen in Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, but away from TV screens, they were also close friends.

Richard wrote on Instagram on Thursday, October 22: “It was Carrie Fisher’s posthumous 70th birthday yesterday. These pics were taken 2 months before she died, ten years ago, with her beloved dog, Gary. We met in 1990 whilst I was filming LA STORY.
“Carrie had that rare gift of making you feel like you’d been friends forever. Poignantly, we were both in the final STAR WARS- RISE OF SKYWALKER – using previously unused footage from THE FORCE AWAKENS.”
Many fans commented on Richard’s post with heart emojis, with one saying: “What a beautiful tribute. You, Sir are a gem of a human being, I love everything about you, such grace, humanity and joy.” Another said: “Carrie taught me from a young age that we could take on anyone and win. Forever my princess. Miss her.”
A third said: “I remember hearing after she died that she used to be the person everyone went to to save their scripts! She was completely epic in so many ways. Can someone make a film about her?”
One more added: “Beautiful photos! She was an incredibly talented, wonderfully funny, truly beautiful lady & I will never forget when she died, followed by her lovely Mother, the fabulous Debbie Reynolds. ‘Bright Lights’ is & always will be one of my favourites…their connection was magical & their bond, everlasting. Thank-you so much for sharing x”
The Celebrity Traitors star struck up an immediate bond with Carrie after meeting at a Hollywood party early in his career. At the time, Carrie famously told him, “You and I are going to be friends for a long time,” a prediction that proved true until her sudden passing 10 years ago.
Because Richard often openly pinched himself around massive celebrities, Carrie lovingly kept him grounded. He frequently recalls her iconic piece of advice to him regarding his habit of name-dropping: “You are no longer a tourist, Richard. You’re one of the attractions.”
Richard and Carrie appeared together in the credits of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019). Carrie appeared posthumously as General Leia Organa via unreleased footage originally shot for The Force Awakens, while Richard joined the franchise as the villainous First Order officer, General Enric Pryde.
The actor admitted he originally had major reservations about how the filmmakers would integrate his late friend’s footage into the final movie, but later praised the execution as “brilliant” and beautifully handled.
