Lionel Messi was rested from the Inter Miami side after a hectic week of travel and could not help from the bench in a 2-0 defeat to New York Red Bulls.
Messi, 39, travelled to Oviedo in Spain on Thursday to receive the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports.
He came on at the start of the second half with his side already trailing to an own goal by former Manchester United man Casemiro.
And Sweden forward Emil Forsberg wrapped up the win in the last minute which leaves Miami third and New York ninth in the Eastern Conference.
“This was something that had already been agreed upon,” Miami coach Kily González said.
“Obviously, he’s been through quite a journey, time zone changes, temperature shifts, and a whole host of other factors.
“We were fully aware of all of this, and we reached an agreement that this was the best approach to ensure he didn’t suffer any issues, specifically to avoid any injuries considering we have another match this Wednesday.
“The goal was for him to recover and get some minutes under his belt today; as always, he performed well.”
Messi is the top scorer in MLS this season with 25 goals.
