In a landmark achievement for sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship, the Union Territory of Ladakh has been officially declared India’s first 100 per cent organic Union Territory by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena.

“The historic accomplishment reflects the unwavering commitment of Ladakh’s farming community and the Administration’s sustained efforts to promote chemical-free and environmentally responsible agricultural practices across the Himalayan region,” an official spokesperson in Leh said on Sunday.

The declaration marks a transformative moment in Ladakh’s development journey, placing the high-altitude, landlocked region at the forefront of the country’s organic farming movement. “By adopting a fully organic model, Ladakh has not only reinforced its traditional agricultural heritage but has also demonstrated how sustainable farming can serve as a powerful tool for ecological conservation, rural prosperity and long-term food security,” Saxena said.

Set against the backdrop of one of the world’s most fragile mountain ecosystems, Ladakh’s transition to organic agriculture is expected to yield significant environmental and socio-economic benefits. The move will contribute to the preservation of soil fertility, the protection of water resources, the enhancement of biodiversity and the strengthening of climate resilience. It also opens new avenues for increasing farmers’ incomes through premium markets for certified organic produce.

“The achievement is closely aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of natural farming, improved soil health, environmental conservation and climate-resilient agriculture,” an official statement said. It added that by embracing organic cultivation on a territory-wide scale, Ladakh has emerged as a national model for sustainable farming practices that are rooted in local traditions while addressing modern environmental challenges.

Congratulating farmers, agricultural workers and all stakeholders associated with the initiative, the Lt. Governor described the occasion as a moment of pride not only for Ladakh but for the entire nation. “This is a moment of immense pride for Ladakh and the entire nation. Our farmers have demonstrated that environmentally responsible agriculture can flourish even in the most challenging geographical conditions. Becoming a fully organic Union Territory is not merely a milestone; it is a commitment to protecting our fragile Himalayan ecosystem, preserving our traditional farming practices and ensuring better livelihoods for our farmers,” he said.

The organic transformation has been backed by decisive policy interventions. In a major step taken in July 2026, the Lt. Governor ordered a complete ban on the procurement, distribution, sale, marketing and use of chemical and synthetic fertilisers for agricultural purposes throughout Ladakh. The decision was aimed at safeguarding the region’s organic status, protecting natural resources and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the agricultural sector.

To facilitate a smooth transition for farmers, the Administration simultaneously strengthened support mechanisms. Earlier, in March 2026, consignments of organic fertilisers were flagged off for distribution across villages in Ladakh, ensuring that cultivators had timely access to organic inputs ahead of the sowing season. The proactive intervention helped reinforce confidence among farming communities and accelerated the UT’s shift towards fully organic cultivation.

The organic status is expected to significantly enhance the market value of Ladakh’s distinctive agricultural produce, including apricots, sea buckthorn, buckwheat, barley and a variety of vegetables. With growing consumer demand for safe, traceable and organically produced food, Ladakh’s farmers stand to benefit from improved branding, value addition, stronger market linkages and better post-harvest management systems. These measures are likely to improve price realisation and create sustainable livelihood opportunities across rural areas.

Emphasising the need to translate this historic achievement into tangible gains for cultivators, Saxena underlined that organic certification must ultimately strengthen farmers’ economic well-being. “Our goal is to ensure that the organic status of Ladakh brings real value to our farmers through better market access, improved price realisation and sustainable livelihoods. We must combine traditional wisdom with scientific support, strengthen organic value chains and protect our natural resources. Let Ladakh’s achievement inspire other states and Union territories to adopt sustainable agriculture in accordance with their own geographical conditions and farming traditions,” he said.
