Bhubaneswar: A woman was allegedly tied to a pole and raped in Jaleswar in Odisha’s Balasore district, prompting police to launch an investigation, sources said on Sunday.
The alleged incident has raised concerns over women’s safety in the area. However, the circumstances surrounding the assault and the sequence of events were yet to be established.
According to preliminary information, the woman was allegedly restrained by tying her to a pole before being sexually assaulted. Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation to ascertain the facts and identify those responsible.
There was no immediate official statement from the local police, and the victim’s account was also not available at the time of filing this report. Further details were awaited.
The incident comes amid scrutiny of the police response to the disappearance and alleged rape and murder of a minor girl in the same district.
The girl went missing on October 18 after leaving home for a dance class. Her body was recovered from Gherapada forest under Bartana panchayat the following day.
The deceased’s family alleged that she had been raped and murdered and claimed that more than one person might have been involved in the crime.
Following the incident, Inspector Ashok Barik of Jaleswar police station was transferred, while Sub-Inspector Karan Marandi, in-charge of Nampo police outpost, was suspended on October 23. The action was reportedly taken over alleged negligence in handling the minor’s disappearance.
