KOBE –
A commemorative ceremony was held in Kobe on October 24 to mark the approaching 100th anniversary of the “Kobe Wall,” a historic structure that survived both the devastating 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake and the firebombing of Kobe during World War II.

The wall was originally constructed in 1927 as a firebreak at a market in Kobe’s Nagata Ward. Despite the destruction caused by wartime air raids and the powerful earthquake that struck the region in January 1995, the structure remained standing, becoming a symbol of the city’s resilience through two major disasters.

Thanks in part to preservation efforts by local citizens’ groups, a section of the wall has been saved and is now on display at the Hokudan Earthquake Memorial Park in Awaji City, Hyogo Prefecture.

With the structure set to reach its centenary in 2027, a commemorative ceremony was held in Nagata Ward on October 24 to recognize its historical significance and the efforts made to preserve it for future generations.

An exhibition tracing the history of the Kobe Wall and its survival through decades of destruction and rebuilding is also being held through November 23.
