Ramayana is soon to be released in the theatres, in which Addinath M Kothare will be playing the role of Lord Ram’s (Ranbir Kapoor) younger brother, Lord Bharat. He recently also featured in Yami Gautam’s Nayyi Navelli as her husband, Raja Awasthi, spoiler alert, in which he transforms into Ravana following a major twist.
Starting as a child actor in Marathi movies, he quickly gained recognition for his talents and also recently won a National Award for his performance in Paani (2024). During an exclusive with Addinath M Kothare, he was asked about his creative vision and the type of adjustments he had to make between working on a Bollywood film and writing, directing, acting, and funding a Marathi film.
To this, Addinath mentioned how language barriers are a thing of the past courtesy of the changing trends. He said, “This was the case a few years back, but now the trend is changing. Language no longer remains a barrier, and Marathi cinema has crossed over, like Raja Shivaji (2026), Tighee (2026), Krantijyoti Vidyalay (2026), and Tumbadchi Manjula (2026).”
He spoke about how Marathi films were having a field day, with national and international audiences enjoying them all the same. He also spoke about Gondhal’s success and their selection for the Oscars. “There are many films that have done tremendous numbers at the box office and are not watched just by the Marathi audience. They have been watched across the world. That is a great sign. Today, Gondhal is selected from India for the Oscars. So, it is a great time for regional content in general.”
He continued, “The main focus is on the story, what you are going to tell and what you are going to show to the audience. If that is unique and that has got substance in it, there are people ready today to back it. There is a market ready to mount your film no matter which language it is.”
