Tillie Radford, daughter of Sue and Noel Radford from 22 Kids and Counting, is currently recovering from a 10-hour procedure she had last month. And now the family have issued another update

Sue and Noel Radford’s daughter Tillie has spent the last month recuperating from a gruelling 10-hour operation on her leg. After a complex procedure to reconstruct her knee and further lengthen the leg, the 16-year-old is now on the road to recovery.

Tillie developed a severe bone infection at 18 months old after doctors drilled onto her bone for line access during treatment for a prolonged febrile convulsion. As the growth place was damaged, her left leg stopped growing at the same rate as her right, leaving it about 3.5cm shorter. Over the past few years, the teenager has undergone multiple procedures, including the 10-hour surgery she had just last month in Liverpool.

Since a positive recovery following the procedure at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Tillie has been making progress with physio and even returned home with her parents a few weeks ago.

Now in a recent post on Instagram, Sue told their 539,000 followers the surgeon is “happy” with Tillie who’s been able to gain movement back in her knee.

Posting a snap of Tillie who appeared pleased in the shot, she said: “Tillie with her gas and air mouth piece which she asked to bring home, she did AMAZING today with the procedure to have the rod removed from just below her knee.

“The surgeon is happy that she will now be able to get movement back in her knee, he’s also really happy with how the lengthening is going we are now over half way with that which is amazing. Onwards and upwards now.”

It shows a beaming Tillie clutching the device, with a carton of juice in her other hand. She also appears to be heading home from hospital, pictured being wheeled out through the car park.

Since the update, many fans rushed to offer their support as one said: “Tillie you are a lovely girl, you’ve had a tough time but you’re ‘getting there’. Well done, your family will look after you.”

Another added: “Oh bless her. Tillie is showing so much strength. Keep going Tillie half way through now. Sending love to you.” Others were gushing over the “fantastic” news.

What happened to Tillie’s leg?

Tillie suffered a bone infection when she was just 18 months old, causing her left leg to be about 3.5cm shorter than her right. In 2019, she had an external mechanical lengthening frame fitted when she was nine.

It wasn’t until last month, the now 16-year-old went to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool for a 10-hour operation to reconstruct her knee and lengthen the leg.

She continued the recover in hospital with ongoing physiotherapy with her parents able to bring her home just a few weeks ago. In a Facebook post, the family said they were “honestly so incredibly proud of Tillie”.

Grateful for the hospital’s help, the post continued to tell fans how “absolutely amazing” Tillie had been throughout the whole procedure.

However, her pain started to hurt again recently with the parents ringing the hospital at 1:30am in a bid to help Tillie through the “really rough night”.
