The Daler Mehndi row refuses to cool down. Uttarakhand Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal has now firmly denied apologising to the singer, contradicting claims that he had made amends over a phone call.
Speaking to YouTube channel Satya Vani, Uniyal was asked directly about the reports. His reply left little room for doubt. “Mera maafi maangne ka prashn hi nahi hai,” he said, which translates to there being no question of him apologising. He followed it with a question of his own: “Maine koi apradh kiya hai jo maafi maangu?” Have I committed any crime that I should apologise for?
A recap for those catching up. The trouble began on October 18, during the cultural evening of the Siddhpeeth Maa Kunjapuri Tourism and Development Fair in New Tehri. Singer Daler Mehndi’s performance was interrupted on stage by Uniyal, who alleged that the singer was under the influence of alcohol and lip-syncing, while performing.
Uniyal’s stand now is that the responsibility lies with the singer. If Mehndi was unwell, he argued, he should have either skipped the show or told the organisers and the audience. “Tabiyat kharab thi toh nahi aana chahiye tha,” ran the line from his interview.

The apology claim came from singer Mika Singh’s team, whose statement welcomed that Uniyal had “apologised to Daler Mehndi paaji over a telephonic conversation.” It was widely reported, which is why the minister’s denial has reopened the confusion over what was actually said in that call.
The singer has had plenty of support from the film fraternity along the way. Anupam Kher criticised the minister for humiliating Mehndi, while Mika Singh and Kapil Sharma also backed him. Mehndi’s son Gurdeep said the family was stressed in the aftermath.
