Bayern coach gives Vincent Kompany update: ‘He’s very calm’

Bayern Munich assistant head coach Aaron Danks says manager Vincent Kompany is yet to receive a diagnosis after collapsing at the club’s training ground on Friday but is “in good spirits” in hospital and appears to be “getting better”.

Former Belgium and Manchester City defender Kompany missed Bayern’s 3-1 win at Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday and received a “short visit” from Danks on Monday, the former Aston Villa coaching staff member said.

“He’s very calm,” said Danks, calling the improvement he perceived in Kompany’s condition “really positive”.

“It’s [about] letting him recover, rest and take his time, so nothing changes there. We had some good conversations but we kept it away from the football specifics, the tactics specifics.

“He asked how everything went, he asked how the players were. Apart from that, it was just a friendly chat. It was nice to see him and catch up.”

What happened to Vincent Kompany?

The 40-year-old had been suffering from a virus and missed Bayern’s press conference a day before their home game against Arsenal in the Champions League last Wednesday.

Kompany took charge for the 2-2 draw but collapsed while watching Bayern’s reserve team two days later.

“The fact is, we protect our coach wherever we can,” Roten director of sport Max Eberl said after Kompany was admitted.

“If a coach says he feels ready to do something, then we’re not going to say ‘we won’t allow that’ if we don’t know what’s going on.

“It’s also everyone’s own responsibility to say ‘I can’t carry on now’.”

How long has Vincent Kompany been in hospital for?

Kompany had been in hospital for four days when Danks spoke on October 27, a day before Bayern were scheduled to host second-tier Magdeburg in the second round of the German Cup.

When could Vincent Kompany return after collapse?

“There are no major updates in terms of diagnosis or return to work – nothing like that at the moment,” said Danks.

Eberl emphasised that everyone at the club should be “clear” on expecting Kompany to return in weeks rather than days.

“Vinnie will be given all the time he needs,” added Eberl. “We’re not starting to put together any timeframes.

“We need to firstly figure out what it is. Then we’ll discuss calmly what the recovery time is to be.”

Ballon d’Or 2026: Harry Kane triumph makes Aaron Danks ‘proud’

Danks admitted that he had not necessarily expected Bayern talisman Harry Kane to win the Ballon d’Or on Monday.

“I can’t say I was overly confident – he had to hold his own against top players,” explained Danks. “The margins were very tight.

“We work very closely with him and see the effort he puts in. As an Englishman, I’m not entirely impartial here, but I see how hard he works every day.

“I’m delighted for him and also for the club; it shows what the club stands for. I’m very proud. I’m also very pleased that Harry has won this for England, as the first player to do so since Michael Owen [in 2001].

“He’ll now come back and carry on in his usual professional and humble way.”

Some observers have speculated that Kane’s remarks about being willing to “work hard in silence” and “let success be your noise” may have been directed at the likes of rival Lamine Yamal.

“Harry’s statement was fantastic for all young players; he wasn’t addressing it to anyone in particular,” said Danks.

“He works incredibly hard to be well prepared. His success speaks for itself. A few years ago, many people said he’d never win anything.

“Those things are coming his way now; he’s letting his success speak for itself.”

Kane could feature when holders Bayern play their German Cup tie. “It’s a fantastic moment for him and a great achievement,” said Danks.

“He’ll be reporting back with the other players that travelled. They’re due back at lunchtime [on Tuesday], so he’ll practice this afternoon and be available.”

Bayern then face Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga in Der Klassiker on Saturday.
