Carragher would have Real Madrid outcast Alexander-Arnold back at Liverpool…and give him plenty of stick!

Jamie Carragher would love to see Trent Alexander-Arnold back at Liverpool.

Alexander-Arnold left Anfield for Real Madrid in controversial circumstances in 2025 – the Spanish giants paying a reduced fee of around £10million after the full-back had run down his contract.

That undoubtedly tarnished the 28-year-old’s legacy on Merseyside, despite helping Liverpool to two Premier League titles, one Champions League crown, two EFL Cups and one FA Cup after coming through the club’s academy.

“I’d have him back,” said Carragher on the Overlap Fan Debate, brought to you by Sky Bet. “Give him plenty of stick… I think he made a mistake, I do. I think he made a big mistake. But, as I said, if something benefits Liverpool Football Club going forward… and we do have problems in terms of the right-back [position].

“Ronnie [Ronald Araújo] has been fantastic but we do have a problem in terms of full-backs passing. We’ve definitely missed his creativity.”

Trent is third-choice at Real Madrid – Carragher

Alexander-Arnold has failed to establish himself at Madrid, struggling for form and fitness under all three managers he has played for.

He started on the bench for Madrid’s Clasico win at Barcelona on Sunday, only appearing for the final few seconds as Jose Mourinho attempted to play down the clock.

Midfielder Federico Valverde started at right-back at Camp Nou and was replaced just after the hour mark by Denzel Dumfries.

Carragher added: “At the moment, he’s third choice right-back for Real Madrid. They’re playing a midfield player at right-back, and even in El Clásico, Denzel Dumfries, the first-choice right-back, if you like, comes on as a sub. So when you’re third choice at a club, they’re obviously wanting you to move on.”

Carragher believes Jacquet is first-choice at Liverpool

Should Alexander-Arnold return to Liverpool he would likely line up alongside Jeremy Jacquet, who has impressed next to Virgil van Dijk following his move from Rennes.

“I think he’s the first-choice centre-back and starting to look after Virgil a little bit rather than the other way around,” Carragher said of the France international. “And even though he’s only played eight games, I already feel he’s an upgrade on everybody else Virgil’s played alongside. I know it’s early to say that, but he really does look the part.

“And Virgil was always going to need that at some stage where he just has to play his own game. He can’t look after a back four. He can’t look after a centre-back partner. I think we’re at that stage now with Van Dijk, still playing well, but he should just be left to play his own game.”

‘Liverpool could be in a title race if they beat Arsenal’

Liverpool have lost just once in all competitions this season – 3-0 hammering at home to Manchester City – and sit fourth in the Premier League table following the weekend victory over Brighton.

They face Chelsea in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night before a big Premier League clash with champions Arsenal on Sunday.

Carragher said: “The thing I like right now is the fact that they’re getting results, things are going well, but I still think there’s a lot of improvement [to come]. When I watch the games, I still don’t think Liverpool have had one 90 minutes where you go, ‘everything was proper’. You know, three or four nil win, got the goals, looked solid at the back, kept the ball.

“I’ve never believed Liverpool are in a title race this season. But if you beat the champions and you’re closer in the table…

“We all look at [Andoni] Iraola’s squad and we probably say he’s been dealt a bad hand to a certain extent. What could Liverpool do in January that could propel them into a title race? If obviously the situation with [Manchester] City is resolved and they’re not actually in the title race, and you’re thinking it’s just Arsenal? It’s not actually the two teams we think we need to overtake, there’s just one now.”
