Dont’e Thornton has more time to prove he belongs in the Raiders’ plans.
Now he needs to make it count.
The Raiders, who have lost four straight games, activated the second-year wide receiver from injured reserve Tuesday, releasing defensive tackle Jonah Laulu in a corresponding move. The decision keeps Thornton’s season alive and gives a struggling offense another option as Las Vegas attempts to halt a four-game losing streak.
The Raiders opened Thornton’s practice window Oct. 7, beginning a 21-day evaluation period that was approaching its Wednesday deadline. Without activation, he would have remained on injured reserve for the rest of the season.
Instead, Thornton gets an opportunity to turn his physical potential into something the Raiders can use.
His return to health had not automatically earned him a return to the roster. Raiders coach Klint Kubiak repeatedly indicated Thornton needed to demonstrate he was ready to contribute, and the Raiders declined to activate him for Sunday’s loss to the Rams.
Tuesday’s move clears the first hurdle. Earning playing time and the coaching staff’s trust represents the next.
The Raiders wide receiver room could get even more crowded with Jack Bech eligible to come off the injured list as well. Bech suffered a broken forearm in Week 3 against the Saints.

A fourth-round pick out of Tennessee in 2025, Thornton arrived with an intriguing combination of size and speed. But the challenge has always been translating those attributes into the consistency necessary to succeed against NFL defensive backs.
For a Raiders receiving corps searching for dependable production beyond Tre Tucker, the opportunity is there.
Thornton does not have to solve every problem. He does need to give the Raiders a reason to put him on the field, whether that means stretching coverage, creating separation or becoming a reliable option when quarterback Kirk Cousins looks his way.
Laulu’s departure grew more possible over the last few weeks. The defensive tackle was inactive against the Rams, a game that extended the Raiders’ slide and intensified questions about their personnel.
For Thornton, the immediate uncertainty is over. The Raiders chose to preserve his opportunity.
What happens next will determine whether they merely added another available receiver or someone capable of helping change the direction of their season.
