Radhika Apte Reveals Zeenat Aman Was The Inspiration Behind Her Look In Akka

Radhika Apte’s look in Akka has a very 70s secret. The actor says she borrowed from Zeenat Aman, the era’s biggest style icon, known for Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Don and Qurbani, while building her character Rudra.

“When I was doing costume and hair, I was looking at Zeenat Aman because of her hair, her fringe and all that. It is a character reference; it was just costume and hair,” Radhika said. The clothing references and the wig she wears lean into that period, she explained, and since Rudra is also from Bombay, some of the references came from Zeenat’s roles on screen.

Akka is a period crime thriller set in a fictional world in the South of India. It is ruled by Bhavani, played by Keerthy Suresh. Radhika plays her nemesis Rudra, a ruthless rebel eyeing Bhavani’s land and legacy. Written and directed by Dharmaraj Shetty and produced by YRF Entertainment, the series premieres on Netflix on October 30.

What drew her in was the world itself. “For me, it is a whole fictitious world. But he (Shetty) has worked really hard to make it very detailed. So, it feels quite real but it is not,” she said. She also loved that the women at the centre did not soften the genre. “Just because it is about women, he has not compromised on the fact that it is a gangster story.”

Neither lead is a goody-goody, and Radhika is delighted about that. “It’s far more interesting than playing a very nice person,” she said. Bhavani, she added, will do whatever it takes to protect her legacy, while “Rudra is also somebody who has her own mission.”

The conversation also turned to OTT, a space Radhika entered early, with shows like Sacred Games and Ghoul. She remembers how it began. “When it came in the beginning, it was a brand new idea and people were afraid as they always are to venture into that.” Since then, she feels the medium has changed massively, and is now settling into its own place.

A fringe, a wig and a 70s icon. Sometimes a whole character starts with the hair.
