Bollywood actress Janhvi Kapoor has finally spoken about the criticism surrounding her role in Ram Charan’s Peddi, admitting that the way her character was presented on screen was problematic. During her appearance on Karan Johar’s show, the actress acknowledged that she could have handled the situation differently and raised her concerns earlier.
“Was it problematic? Was it extreme objectification? Did it even propagate sexual assault narratively? Yes,” Janhvi admitted. Her character had faced criticism from a section of viewers who felt that certain scenes focused more on sexualising her than giving the character the dignity it deserved.
Looking back, Janhvi said she could have spoken up but chose not to at the time. She explained that while the scenes were part of the script, the camera angles and the way they would be filmed were not clearly mentioned to her beforehand.
The actress also revealed that the backlash made her question her own decisions. She felt she should have been more alert during the process and used her position to question the way her character was being portrayed.
Janhvi pointed out that actors in the South Indian film industry do not always get access to a bound script or details of how every scene will be shot in advance. She said she tried to address the concerns as she learnt more about the filming process.
Her comments suggest that the experience has made her reflect on the importance of speaking up on set, especially when it comes to how a female character is presented on screen.
