Former Loose Women star Carol McGiffin didn’t hold back as she shared her thoughts on Richard Madeley while discussing their respective homes in the south of France
Carol McGiffin couldn’t resist taking a swipe at Richard Madeley as she opened up about life in the south of France. The former Loose Women star lives in the French Riviera with her husband, while Richard and his wife, Judy Finnigan, own a holiday home nearby.
Discussing her famous neighbour with Best Magazine’s Siobhan Wykes on the Suddenly Single podcast, Carol said: “People always compare him to Alan Partridge but when I did see him on TV, I always thought he was very entertaining.
“We saw him a couple of times [in the south of France] this year and I went up to him and went, ‘Hey Richard’ and he was like, ‘Oh, hi, how long are you down for?’
“I’m like, ‘Yeah I live here, I told you that about a thousand times’.”
Siobhan then remarked that she had noticed Richard sitting and reading the papers at his holiday home, prompting Carol to quip: “He sits there sunning himself like he’s not brown enough.”
“Yeah but he’s not starry like that, I mean he just sits out on the pavement with his newspaper and his coffee and if people walk past…,” Siobhan began, before Carol interjected with a swipe: “In the same T-shirt everyday, not that I notice things like that.”
Despite her teasing, Carol insisted she did like the Good Morning Britain presenter, adding: “He’s really nice, but I don’t know what the point of having a house down there and not going to it is. I think Chloe [his daughter] goes there quite a lot.”
Richard and Judy are thought to have purchased a villa in the south of France in 2004 and typically visit during the summer months.
Last year, the 70-year-old suffered an injury while in France after taking a nasty fall.
Appearing on Good Morning Britain with his wrist in a plaster cast, he explained to viewers: “It’s a double fracture of the wrist.
“I was walking quite quickly down a steep pavement in France on Friday, and the pavement was loose.
“It flipped up, and it flipped me forward.” He continued: “I thought, am I going to win or will gravity win? And gravity won. I hit the ground hard.
“So yeah I’ve got a double fracture and we’ll see how it goes.” Meanwhile, Carol moved to her home overseas in 2015, following her recovery from breast cancer.
She continued commuting to London to appear on Loose Women before quitting the ITV show in 2023.
Speaking to OK! Magazine, the broadcaster said: “I used to love flying back to London to do Loose Women, but travel got more difficult and Loose Women got more difficult… I don’t miss it at all.”
“It was once a great job. It doesn’t really have many alternative opinions now,” she added.
“And I do watch it occasionally to remind myself that I made the right decision. I don’t regret leaving – I don’t fit in there any more. Someone, somewhere will be offended by absolutely everything.”
