Hyderabad: A 34-year-old man from Saroornagar lost Rs 35.21 lakh in an online lottery fraud over a period of 14 months after being lured into investing through a platform. Malkajgiri Cybercrime police registered a case following his complaint and commenced investigations.

According to the complaint, the victim received a message from an unknown mobile number on August 18, 2025, and was added to a group without his consent. The group’s administrators and members shared lottery tips, recommendations and screenshots of substantial winnings to gain his trust.

Once he responded, the administrators then guided him to download an application and invest money in lottery activities. He initially invested Rs 2,000 and was shown profits. When he withdrew the money, Rs 500 was credited to him. Encouraged, he started investing via various UPI IDs. The gang showed that he was losing money, and lured him to continue investing by paying out small returns. The victim borrowed from friends and relatives, pledged his gold to obtain a gold loan and took personal loans to arrange funds. He said he eventually invested Rs 40,80,500 but received only Rs 5,59,491, leaving him with a loss of Rs 35,21,009.
