HOKKAIDO –
Hokkaido University’s famous ginkgo avenue in Sapporo has reached its peak autumn color, attracting residents and tourists to the campus ahead of the two-day Hokudai Golden Leaf Festival on October 31 and November 1, an event that drew 35,000 visitors last year.

The tree-lined avenue, located along Kita 13-jo Street on the university’s campus in Sapporo’s Kita Ward, features approximately 70 ginkgo trees stretching 380 meters. Each year, the leaves begin turning a brilliant yellow in late October, creating a golden canopy that glows in the sunlight and forms one of the city’s most picturesque autumn scenes.

The spectacular display is expected to remain at its best through early November, giving visitors an opportunity to enjoy the changing colors as Hokkaido enters the final weeks of autumn.

The annual Hokudai Golden Leaf Festival, organized by university students, will take place over the weekend of October 31 and November 1. The popular event attracted approximately 35,000 visitors over two days last year, making it a major seasonal attraction for the city.

Food stalls will be set up along the avenue, while special illuminations are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., transforming the golden trees into a nighttime spectacle.

Visitors will be able to experience two distinct views of the ginkgo avenue, with sunlight illuminating the brilliant yellow leaves during the day and artificial lighting creating a different atmosphere after dark.
