Travelling through Bavaria? The Nuremberg-Ingolstadt high-speed line is closing from Friday for six weeks, bringing replacement buses, fewer services and journeys up to 45 minutes longer.

Passengers travelling between Munich, Ingolstadt and Nuremberg face significant disruption from 10pm on Friday, October 30th, until December 12th.

The high-speed line between Nuremberg and Ingolstadt will close completely for major renovation work, affecting regional commuters and long-distance travellers alike.

Services are due to return from December 13th, but until then passengers should allow extra time and check their connection before setting off.

Local journeys – Buses and diversions

Regional passengers between Nuremberg and Ingolstadt will face some of the most disruptive changes.

RE1 services on the Munich–Ingolstadt–Nuremberg route will be diverted via Treuchtlingen or Augsburg.

Replacement buses will serve stops including Allersberg, Allersberg (Rothsee), Johannisbrücke, Kinding, Kinding Marktplatz and Ingolstadt Nord.

The replacement buses are expected to take around twice as long as the usual rail journey, although their timetables have been coordinated with trains to make onward connections in Nuremberg and Ingolstadt as straightforward as possible.

Longer journeys across Germany

The closure will also affect several important ICE routes. Direct trains between Munich and Berlin will continue to run at least hourly, but will be diverted via Augsburg and Donauwörth.

The diversion is expected to add approximately 45 minutes to journey times. Services between Nuremberg and Berlin are expected to run without restrictions.

Passengers travelling from Munich towards Hamburg via Kassel will have fewer options. Trains on this route will run every two hours instead of hourly, with services in the intervening hours beginning or ending in Nuremberg.

Direct Munich–Frankfurt trains via Nuremberg will be suspended during the closure. Deutsche Bahn recommends using the alternative route via Stuttgart.

Passengers are also being advised to check DB Navigator, bahn.de or DB’s Bavaria traffic information before departure.

Why is the line closing?

The route opened in 2006 and carries around 170 trains a day, some travelling at up to 300 kilometres per hour. After nearly 20 years of intensive use, its tracks need replacing.

The roughly €70 million project includes installing more than 160 kilometres of new track between Allersberg, Kinding and Ingolstadt Nord, as well as replacing switches, laying cables, inspecting tunnels and cleaning drainage systems.
