Vernon Kay was left red-faced during a Halloween broadcast on BBC Radio 2 after co-star Sara Cox exposed an embarrassing mishap that threatened to derail his much-anticipated costume reveal
Vernon Kay was left facing an awkward moment on BBC Radio 2 after his co-star Sara Cox appeared to expose a mishap involving his plans for Halloween.
Sara, 51, was wrapping up their breakfast shows on Friday (October 30) when she turned her attention to Vernon’s studio, prompting a playful exchange between the pair.
Wishing listeners a happy Halloween, Sara also sent her congratulations to her nephew Dan and his bride Evie, before reflecting on another busy week on the breakfast show.
But she couldn’t resist commenting on what was happening in Vernon’s studio, telling him: “And over in Vernon’s Studio, it doesn’t look that spooky. There’s a whiff of Book Day about it.”
Vernon was quick to realise where his co-star was heading, replying: “Shut your face Cox, I know where you’re going at with this.”
Sara then teased him further, asking: “Do you want to? Are you going to tell everybody in a minute? Well, I’ll let you do it.”
Clearly aware that he was about to be exposed, Vernon joked: “Thank you. Just let me cushion the fall from you throwing me under the bus. It’s fine.”
Sara explained that listeners had been anticipating a big Halloween costume reveal from Vernon, with plenty of excitement building around what he would be wearing.
She said: “All the talk has been like, ‘All right, now you’re going to see his outfit. You wait till you see his costume, you wait.’ And we’re going to put the cameras on, and you’ll see it.”
However, things hadn’t quite gone to plan.
“And then something went pear-shaped, but I’ll let you explain,” Sara added.
Attempting to explain his predicament, Vernon compared himself to a moth attracted to a bright light.
“Well the thing is Sara, you know… You know what I’m like? I’m like a moth when it sees the fluorescent light in the garage,” he said.
Sara questioned whether he’d spotted something shiny that morning, prompting Vernon to admit his mistake.
“Yeah I went chasing and left the house without my Halloween costume, so it’s no surprise to many, disappointment to lots,” he confessed.
The exchange comes after Vernon previously found himself in hot water following an awkward moment on his BBC Radio 2 breakfast show.
The presenter, 52, addressed an earlier gaffe during his October 27 programme while speaking to travel reporter Ellie Brennan.
The incident had occurred a week earlier when Vernon introduced Ellie as the “Lady of the Lanes” before suggesting alternative titles, including “Lady of the Layby”.
However, things took an unfortunate turn when he suggested “The Harlot of the Hard-shoulder”.
Realising his mistake, Vernon looked up the meaning of the word and discovered it was not what he had intended.
Reflecting on the moment during his later broadcast, he joked: “I’ve just given it a Google. Yeah, it’s not what I thought it meant. Yeah, education is key.”
He also admitted: “Oh no, it’s quite offensive.”
