RAIPUR: The ruling BJP MLA of Chhattisgarh Domanlal Korsewada, who represented the Ahiwara assembly seat in Durg district, passed away on Friday at the age of 78 after a prolonged illness.

He died at Yashoda Hospital in Hyderabad while undergoing treatment for a prolonged lung infection, officials said here.

A two-time MLA, he was elected from the Ahiwara seat first in 2008 and then in 2023.

He previously worked as a lecturer before entering active politics after his retirement from service in 1998.

He held important roles including chairman of the Chhattisgarh Development Authority (CDA) (with cabinet minister rank) and was serving as vice-chairman of the Scheduled Caste Development Authority at the time of his death.

Chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed shock and sorrow over the demise of the MLA, saying that it is an irreparable loss for the party as well as the state.

Mr. Sai described him as a simple and down-to-earth person.

State BJP president Kiran Singh Deo also expressed grief over the death of the party MLA.

With the death of the MLA, the strength of BJP in the 90-member Chhattisgarh Assembly has reduced to 53.
