Vijayawada:Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu’s emphasis on crop insurance is expected to provide financial relief to farmers affected by Cyclone Arnab, which has inundated large tracts of agricultural land across Andhra Pradesh.
With heavy rains and floods damaging standing crops, the insurance coverage extended to 22 notified crops worth `15,969.51 crore would play a crucial role in protecting farmers from financial losses.
Naidu has consistently stressed the importance of crop insurance, maintaining that although natural disasters cannot be prevented, their financial impact on farmers can be reduced through adequate insurance. The current cyclone situation has once again highlighted the importance of safeguarding farmers’ investments and hard work.
For the 2026 kharif season, AP provided insurance coverage for approximately 17.12 lakh hectares under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) and the Restructured Weather-Based Crop Insurance Scheme (RWBCIS). Of the total coverage, 15 crops have yield-based insurance worth `10,534.72 crore, while seven crops have weather-based coverage of `5,434.79 crore.
Preliminary estimates indicate that nearly 4.10 lakh hectares of crops across 16 districts have been inundated due to cyclone Arnab.
Crop insurance will help assess the losses and provide compensation to eligible farmers as per the prescribed guidelines. The assistance would also help them arrange investments for the next cropping season.
Under the 2026 kharif coverage, the sum insured per acre is approximately Rs 40,000 for paddy, Rs 20,000 for red gram, Rs 90,000 for dry chilli, Rs 33,000 for maize and Rs 94,000 for turmeric.
The government has planned 30,286 crop-cutting experiments (CCEs) under PMFBY to assess actual yields and determine claims by comparing them with threshold yields. Under RWBCIS, rainfall, temperature and other weather indicators would be assessed against prescribed trigger limits.
After verification of farmer enrolment, e-Panta crop details and claim eligibility, the admissible compensation would be credited directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts.
