Vijayawada:Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan has directed Kakinada district officials to prepare plans for permanent solutions to the problems of coastal fishermen, instead of resorting to temporary measures during every cyclone.
In this regard, the Deputy CM asked officials to examine the feasibility of providing insurance cover to fishing boats.
Pawan Kalyan held a virtual meeting with district officials and residents of coastal villages on Friday in the wake of Cyclone Arnab. He said he would visit fisherfolk’s villages after Deepavali to study their problems personally.
The DCM directed officials to expedite the Detailed Project Report for the Uppada coastal protection wall and begin its construction at the earliest. Proposals for extending the wall up to Konapapapeta should also be pursued for early approval, he suggested.
Pawan Kalyan ordered immediate restoration of the cyclone-damaged Uppada-Kakinada beach road to ensure connectivity to coastal villages.
He appreciated the administration for evacuating over 10,000 people from 92 coastal habitations and accommodating them in 102 relief centres. He expressed happiness that inundation of seawater in Suradapeta, Mayapatnam, Kothapatnam, and Nayakar Colony has been cleared within 24 hours. He directed officials to restore power supply in cyclone-hit areas of Pithapuram constituency, where fallen poles and damaged wires have affected several villages.
The Deputy Chief Minister wanted quick enumeration of damaged houses, crops, boats, fishing nets, and handlooms, with comprehensive reports submitted for compensation. He underlined that affected families should receive 25 kg of rice, while fishermen and weavers should get 50 kg each, besides essential commodities.
Pawan Kalyan praised the 45 NDRF and SDRF teams and police, revenue, municipal, electricity, health, and rural development personnel for carrying out rescue, relief, and restoration work efficiently.
Those who attended the review meeting included Kakinada Rural MLA Pantam Nanaji, collector Harendhira Prasad and senior officials.
