In a 2021 conversation with Drew Barrymore on her titular talk show, Dax spoke about the relationship he was in before marrying fellow actress Kristen Bell. He explained that at the beginning of his relationship with Bell, there was jealousy on her part for pretty good reasons. He mentioned that he had been in an open relationship for nine years. He said:
“I had been in an open relationship for nine years; I was blacked out for a big chunk of my life. You know, there were a lot of things for her to be concerned about.”
The Armchair Expert host shared that after they got serious, that jealousy went away. He explained that after they got engaged, he began feeling more secure and committed to Kristen. He also realized that Bell was not someone who constantly felt jealous. He found this quality of Bell particularly attractive because he appreciated that Kristen trusted him. The two tied the knot in 2013 and have two daughters together. The duo has been very vocal about the ups and downs in their relationship.
In a January 2021 interview on NBC’s Sunday TODAY with Willie Geist, Dax explained that he doesn’t want people to believe his relationship with Kristen had always been perfect. He admitted that their relationship has had its share of difficulties. Explaining it further, Dax said:
“We don’t want anyone to think we met and it’s been easy because if that’s someone’s expectation of a relationship and certainly a marriage, it’s a bad expectation to have.”

Dax and Kristen initially met at an intimate sushi dinner celebrating the birthday of Shauna Robertson, producer of Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Two weeks after their initial encounter, the duo, who are Michigan natives, met again at a Detroit Red Wings hockey game and bonded over their shared home state. The next day, the Armchair Expert host got Bell’s number from Robertson so he could contact her.
In an interview, Bell shared that she fell in love with Dax way before he fell for her. However, just three months into dating, Shepard and Bell broke up. At the time, Dax admitted he was not ready for commitment. Things changed after four days when the Armchair Expert host told Bell that it was his mistake leaving her.
In late 2009, Shepard proposed to Bell, and they got engaged secretly. On October 17, 2013, the couple got married in a private ceremony at the Beverly Hills courthouse. Bell and Dax have two daughters, Lincoln Bell Shepard and Delta Bell Shepard.
