A bird-themed board game offers a way to share an interest in animals at home. It can suit people who enjoy board games and wildlife.
The Wingspan range includes several boxes with similar names. However, they do not all work in the same way. Some are complete games, while others add cards or features to a game you already own.
These two options offer different starting points.
Wingspan: for one to five players
The original Wingspan is a complete game for one to five players. Publisher Stonemaier Games lists a playing time of 40 to 70 minutes.
Players build groups of bird cards across different habitats. These are the natural places where birds live. During the game, players collect food tokens, place egg pieces and add more birds.
The box contains 170 different bird cards. It also includes player boards, dice and a small cardboard bird feeder used to roll the dice.
This may suit a household that sometimes plays alone and sometimes invites friends.
Wingspan Asia: a complete option for one or two players
Wingspan Asia can work as a separate game for one or two people. You do not need the original Wingspan for those modes.
The two-player option is called Duet mode. This makes the box worth considering if you usually play with one other person.
The box can also add bird cards to the original game. A further option allows six or seven people to play together, but that requires parts from the original Wingspan.
For a group of three to five, the original game is the clearer starting point. For one or two players, compare both sets of rules before choosing.
