Nineteen seasons and still counting, Bigg Boss 20 continues to be India’s biggest non-fiction juggernaut — a format that has not just survived, but scaled higher, evolving with every season. Produced by Banijay Asia, the franchise today spans Hindi and five regional editions — Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Marathi — collectively reaching over 400 million viewers annually across television and digital.
In 2006, it began as a single-season celebrity reality experiment but eventually, rolled out into a year-round ecosystem. With A-list celebrity hosts, 24/7 live feeds, and a house designed to create conversation, camaraderie and conflict, the show remains unmatched in appointment viewing and social chatter. The emergence of JioStar led to the launch of Bigg Boss franchise on a grand scale. Now, all versions of Bigg Boss are streaming on a single platform – JioHotstar, creating a consolidated destination for the franchise. From catch-up episodes to 24×7 Live, unseen cuts and interactive fan engagement, the OTT integration has significantly extended the watch time and regional reach.
Speaking about the success of Bigg Boss, Sohail Khan says, “The show continues to be one of the most popular reality shows on Indian television. The most Enduring Reality TV Franchise, Bigg Boss, is a show from which people can actually learn a lot. Most people look at it purely as an entertainment programme, but I believe there is much more to it. You get an opportunity to understand people’s psychology and their behaviour. When you can observe yourself and identify similar traits within yourself and feel the need to change, you can make an effort to improve yourself. In that sense, the show can be quite insightful.” When asked if his mother still watches the show, he says, “Yes, of course. Maa is an ardent follower of BB and Bhai ko dekhna hota hai. She waits to watch the ‘weekend ka Vaar’ as well.”
Designer Riyaz Gangji, who follows Bigg Boss regularly, feels the reality show is the most enduring and continuously evolving. “I have been watching Bigg Boss for a long time. It’s a fun show, but due to time constraint, I watch it whenever it is possible. The biggest reason BB is still going strong – Salman Khan. He is the main attraction for the show. Through Bigg Boss, audiences get to see the real Salman Khan, and that makes the show special. Audiences get an opportunity to see Salman Khan’s true personality and, his emotions. He connects directly with people. He is the USP of the show. His ability to connect with audiences is one of the reasons behind Bigg Boss’ success. Khan’s presence is extremely important. The show revolves around the contestants, but his interaction with them, especially during the weekend episodes, is the major attraction. He connects with people across generations, from youngsters to the old-aged. That kind of connection is rare, and it works tremendously well for the show. Apart from his popularity, it is his personal connection that makes Khan’s presence powerful on the TV.” This time, even if the contestants do not have popularity, Salman Khan’s presence adds tremendous value to the show. His popularity and hosting help maintain the audience’s interest.
Trade Analyst Narender Gupta feels the show is a brand magnet for advertisers. “Bigg Boss is more than a show — it’s a media plan in itself. With multi-layered advertising – TV sponsorships, OTT pre-rolls, CTV integrations, product placements, in-show tasks, and creator-led social extensions – the franchise ensures sustained revenues across three screens: Television, OTT and Connected TV. The formula is simple but unbeatable: Controversy + Celebrity + Community.”
Salman Khan, who continues to host the show, sums up: “There is a constant need for reinvention for every new season. Every season of Bigg Boss brings a fresh game, new dynamics and unexpected twists. In this season, there’s a mystery at the heart of it that makes it unlike anything we’ve seen before.”
