Preview for Manchester United v Roma
Manchester United host Roma at Old Trafford on Tuesday night with the pressure firmly on boss Michael Carrick and his group of under-performing players.
Carrick has two games before the international break – tomorrow and against Aston Villa at the weekend – and it seems his departure is likely even if he gets six points.
Despite his prospects looking bleak, the former England midfielder was in a positive mood at Monday’s press conference.
He said: “The dressing room is in a good place. Perception is a funny thing. You can make things look different ways and think about all sorts of different things.
“The commitment of the players to the club, to me, to each other – do not question at all. We need to play better, we can make better decisions, but the commitment is not a thing at all.
“We know what we are capable of. We are close but need to act on it quickly. We have two great games this week. A great opportunity to attack the games.”
Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Chelsea was another painful afternoon. United had an encouraging first half, but Lisandro Martínez was sent off as they slipped to another defeat. United have lost four of their last five games in all competitions, and they have failed to score in three of them.
Their last win of any kind came against Champions League debutants Sabah almost two months ago. Since then, they have been thrashed 4-1 at Como and beaten 3-0 at home by Bournemouth. United are 21st in the league-phase table, and another defeat would leave them on three points from four games.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s Roma arrive in completely different form. They are unbeaten in Serie A this season, winning seven and drawing three, and they hammered Udinese 5-2 on Saturday. Donyell Malen has been the star once again, with eight Serie A goals and three in the Champions League.
History is very much on United’s side, though. Roma have never won at Old Trafford, and they have suffered some heavy defeats there, including a 7-1 hammering in 2007 and a 6-2 defeat in the Europa League semi-final first leg in 2021.

Team News for Manchester United v Roma
United are without Luke Shaw while Marcus Rashford is a major doubt. Leny Yoro is likely to be fit.
Carrick said: “Leny has had a bit of a tendon [issue], it’s one of them that comes and goes. But he’s been fine and I’ve been delighted with him.
“Marcus and Luke, Luke definitely won’t be around this week. Marcus, we’ll just have to see, day by day, how he keeps improving.”
Manuel Ugarte and Benjamin Šeško are out due to injury.
For Roma, goalkeeper Mile Svilar is unlikely to be available, so Pierluigi Gollini should keep his place. Paulo Dybala’s availability is uncertain. Malen will lead the line.

Prediction for Manchester United v Roma
It’s hard to back United at the minute and Roma will arrive in good form and looking to make things even more difficult for Carrick. A draw isn’t much good for either side so we’re tipping the visitors to edge it.
