Hyderabad: In the egg donation racket busted by Malkajgiri police, it is suspected that women recruited from different states were allegedly being subjected to conception and immediate abortion to assess egg viability before retrieval.
Police foiled the operation before oocyte donation and supply to fertility centres.
Cases registered by Begumpet and Saroornagar police identified four prominent fertility centre groups, including those with multiple branches in Hyderabad and across the state, now under the scanner for suspected links to the network.
Their role in arrangements to supply retrieved eggs is being examined.
Nine persons were apprehended during raids at four locations in Malkajgiri.
A total of 43 women from West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and other states were rescued from premises in Prakashnagar, Begumpet, Erragadda, Saroornagar and Gopalapuram.
The accused were sent to judicial remand.
A source explained that the operation involved coordinating menstrual cycles of multiple women so procedures could be completed around the same time, reducing expenditure on repeated laboratory tests and medical procedures.
Women were first subjected to fertility assessments, then administered hormonal injections to regulate and sync cycles, followed by medication to stimulate ovaries to produce multiple eggs.
According to the source, in some cases the procedure also involved assessing whether eggs could result in conception through insemination, followed by abortion before retrieval.
Police intervened while the operation was still at the assessment stage.
Investigators are concentrating on the financial trail, which they believe could provide crucial evidence of the network’s operations.
They are examining transactions between rescued women and recruitment agents, including why money was transferred, who made payments and whether commissions were routed through intermediaries.
Payments between organisers, agents and suspected service providers are also being traced, with the accused required to explain the nature of these transactions.
Process:
– Screening: Women were tested for reproductive health.
– Cycle synchronisation: Hormones were used to align menstrual cycles.
– Stimulation: Injections were administered to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs.
– Egg assessment: Eggs were examined for health and viability.
– Conception assessment: Semen was introduced to check whether fertilisation occurred.
– Abortion: Pregnancy was allegedly terminated after conception.
– Retrieval: Eggs were collected from the women.
– Supply: The eggs were allegedly sent to fertility centres.
