Johnny Depp Teases Jack Sparrow Return: Wants to Send Pirates Off on a Better Note

For over two decades, the rum-swigging, kohl-eyed swagger of Captain Jack Sparrow defined modern swashbuckling cinema. But ever since Johnny Depp’s bitter, highly publicised fallout with Disney, global franchise loyalists assumed the eccentric pirate had sailed over the horizon for good. Think again. The Oscar-nominated star has officially cracked the cabin door wide open, teasing an unexpected, potential return for the long-gestating Pirates of the Caribbean 6.

While promoting his upcoming film Ebenezer, Depp spoke candidly to Entertainment Tonight about revisiting his most celebrated cinematic alter-ego. Admitting he is surprisingly open to donning the beaded dreadlocks under the right creative circumstances, he confessed, “If things are exactly where they need to be with regard to how they are going to top off the ‘Pirates’ franchise… the only involvement I really want to have, truly, is just to send them off on a better note”.

What makes this possible comeback genuinely plausible is his rock-solid bond with veteran franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Clearing any lingering doubts about lingering studio friction, Depp emphasised his unwavering personal loyalty: “I will go to work with [Jerry] Bruckheimer tomorrow for anything. Doesn’t matter… if it’s Jerry, I trust him. We have a deep friendship.”

The mutual warmth between the two collaborators is undeniably palpable. Bruckheimer previously teased the possibility of Depp’s dramatic return, revealing to Entertainment Weekly that the script remains the ultimate key: “If he likes the way the part’s written, I think he would do it. It’s all about what’s on the page, as we all know… We are still working on a screenplay. We want to make it. We just got to get the right screenplay. We haven’t quite gotten there yet, but we’re close.”

Having steered five blockbuster instalments grossing over $4.5 billion worldwide between 2003 and 2017, the iconic seafaring franchise feels completely hollow without its drunkenly charming compass. If Bruckheimer cracks the screenplay, the Black Pearl might just set sail with its rightful captain one last memorable, swashbuckling time.
