What happens when a relationship that once revolved around excitement and passion begins to feel familiar? Is the fading of that initial spark a sign that love is running its course, or does it simply mean that the relationship is entering a different phase? These are some of the questions explored in the South Korean romantic drama A Love Other Than Yours, starring Seo Kang-joon and Ahn Eun-jin.
The series follows Namgoong Ho (Seo Kang-joon) and Lee Mi-do (Ahn Eun-jin), a couple who have been together for 10 years. Having known each other since childhood, they have shared several milestones, but their relationship begins to change as they find themselves at different stages in their personal and professional lives. While Ho believes marriage is the natural next step, Mi-do, a film director dealing with a career slump, begins to question what she wants from the relationship. The arrival of another person further complicates matters, forcing them to confront the state of their love and the choices that lie ahead.
For Seo Kang-joon, the series also arrived at a point when he was looking at life and his choice of stories differently, following his military service. The actor, who returned to acting after completing his service, said the experience made him reflect on how people live and the circumstances they navigate.
In an exclusive conversation with Filmfare, he said, “Military service in Korea now lasts one and a half years, which is much shorter than it used to be. The conditions have improved considerably, but it is still the military. During my time there, I kept thinking about why I had to keep living the way I was and how I should overcome the situations I was in. After I was discharged from the military, I wanted to talk more about lifestyles and how people are living. This series was a good opportunity for me to talk about life and share something with the audience. I thought it was a drama that could give people excitement and resonance.”
The changing dynamics between Ho and Mi-do also prompted a conversation about the expectations placed on modern relationships, particularly the pressure to keep the initial spark alive even after being together for several years. Kang-joon believes that a long-term relationship inevitably goes through difficult phases, but the answer may not always lie in trying to bring back what once existed.
He explained, “Having a long-term relationship for 10 years means you will also feel heartbroken, and there will be a lot of different ways to overcome that. However, it is not really about overcoming it but accepting how this love has changed. It is not about the spark. This is a new kind of love, and it depends on how you accept it.”
He further reflected on how the familiarity and comfort shared by two people can evolve into another form of love. For him, recognising and accepting that change is more important than constantly trying to recreate the excitement of the early days. Ahn Eun-jin, however, believes that the spark continues to have its place in a relationship, even as comfort becomes equally important over time.
“Spark is very important but being comfortable is also important. There are a lot of difficulties in life, so you have to cherish the person who gives you that familiarity. There are a lot of stories in this drama, and there will be a lot of different ways to overcome them,” she said.
Directed by Hwang Seung-ki and Lee Ga-ram, A Love Other Than Yours also stars Lee Joo-ahn and Jo A-ram. The show is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
