VISAKHAPATNAM: The three-party alliance has swept the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) elections, winning 98 of the 120 wards and securing a commanding majority in the civic body.
According to the final results announced on Tuesday night, the TD emerged as the single largest party with 64 wards. Its allies, the Jana Sena and BJP, won 26 and eight wards respectively.
The YSRC secured 13 wards, Independents won eight, and the CPI(M) took one.
The verdict, which gives the alliance more than four-fifths of the corporation’s seats, puts its mayoral candidate, Mukka Sravani, in a strong position to take office.
Sravani thanked voters and said the mandate brought greater responsibility. “We bow our heads in gratitude to the people of Visakhapatnam. They have once again reposed faith in us. This massive mandate brings greater responsibility, and I thank voters for electing our corporators and mayoral candidate with such strong support,” she told a victory gathering.
Visakhapatnam MP Sribharat described the victory as an endorsement of the alliance and its leadership. Visakhapatnam North MLA Vishnu Kumar Raju said the results reflected strong public support despite the lower voter turnout.
MLA Vamsi Krishna Srinivas Yadav thanked voters and credited the victory to the leadership of Chandrababu, PM Modi and deputy CM Pawan Kalyan.
Independents won wards 36, 39, 41, 73, 86, 98, 106 and 118, while CPI(M) candidate Mokalla Krishnaiah won Ward 105.
Meanwhile, the YSRC questioned the fairness of the polls. Its Visakhapatnam district president, KK Raju, alleged irregularities in the handling of polling materials and sought detailed polling percentage data. Raju said the party had sought clarifications from election officials and would consider legal options if their explanations were unsatisfactory.
