Mike Tomlin’s chances of returning to NFL coaching have taken another hit after former Pittsburgh Steelers player Cam Heyward suggested the veteran coach has no plans to leave his new broadcasting role.
Tomlin stepped away from the Steelers after 19 seasons and joined NBC’s Football Night in America, where he has quickly become a familiar face on the network’s NFL coverage.

While speculation continues over whether teams could tempt him back to the sidelines, Heyward believes his former coach is enjoying life away from football management.
Cam Heyward believes Mike Tomlin is happy with his NBC role
Heyward, who spent his entire NFL career playing under Tomlin in Pittsburgh, offered a revealing assessment of the coach’s future during an appearance shared by Steelers Depot.
“Cam Heyward believes Mike Tomlin will not return to Coaching: ‘Guys, he’s not coming back. He’s way too comfortable. He told me as soon as he walked in, ‘I win every week now.’ And I’m like, ‘I get that.’ I get that. And I’m not gonna fight against that because that’s a pretty sweet job he’s got going on over there,” Steelers Depot posted on X.

The defensive tackle has also enjoyed seeing a different side of his former head coach become more visible through television.
“It’s fun, because we’ve always appreciated Mike T. for who he is as a man and who he is as a person, so to see everybody see his personality, I think it’s really cool because it just gives a different side to him,” Heyward said.
Tomlin has given a similar impression himself. Speaking on The Dan Patrick Show, he admitted that his new routine has been a welcome change after spending almost his entire life involved in football camps and team preparations.
“I am having the time of my life to be quite honest with you,” Tomlin said.
He also spoke about enjoying the opportunity to focus on his health and personal life.

However, a return to coaching cannot be completely ruled out. Front Office Sports reporter Mark Maske has suggested Tomlin could attract significant interest from NFL teams in the coming months.
Tomlin finished his Steelers tenure with 193 wins, 114 losses and two ties, never recording a losing season. He also led Pittsburgh to a Super Bowl victory after the 2008 campaign.
For now, Heyward’s comments suggest Tomlin is comfortable in the NBC studio. Whether a lucrative coaching offer changes that remains an open question.
