In an abrupt move, Brebeuf Jesuit athletic director Ted Hampton resigned his position as athletic director on Tuesday.

Hampton, who had worked at Brebeuf since 2007, told IndyStar that his duties with the construction company he started during the pandemic grown to the point where he did not feel like he could serve both positions.

“(The construction company) has grown immensely the past few years and I don’t feel like I’m serving the Brebeuf community as well as I should,” Hampton said. “There are no problems, no issues. My daughter (Lucy) is a sophomore at Brebeuf and I have nothing but amazing memories and have met a ton of incredible people. I’m thankful for 20 years serving this community.”

In a message to IndyStar, Brebeuf vice president for marketing and communications Mike Higginbotham confirmed Hampton had resigned his position effective Tuesday and “we thank him for his years of service and wish him well in future endeavors.”

Assistant athletic director Jake Weinstein will fill the vacated position. Weinstein has been assistant athletic director at Brebeuf since 2015.

“We are extremely excited to announce that Jake Weinstein has been elevated to the role of athletic director, effective immediately,” Higginbotham said. “Jake’s institutional knowledge, care for others, and commitment to Jesuit education is second-to-none. We all look forward to him leading us into a successful winter season and beyond.”

Hampton said he originally planned to stay through his daughter’s graduation from Brebeuf in the spring of 2029. Those plans changed.

“My business grew organically and I felt like I had a responsibility to my family to see that through,” he said. “It was a side hustle and I’ve since had to hire a staff and it got to a point where I felt like I had to make a hard decision because of my love for Brebeuf. We just got through the fall season and I felt like doing both jobs wasn’t going to be possible.”

Hampton, a Purdue graduate, came to Brebeuf in 2007 from Lafayette Central Catholic when Ryan Gallogly left LCC to coach the Brebeuf football program. Hampton moved up to the athletic director role in 2014. He thanked previous and current Brebeuf leadership for the opportunity at Brebeuf, especially Murray Clark and John Dillon.

Brebeuf won three state championships in 2021-22 in boys cross country, boys soccer and volleyball.

“I didn’t know anything about Brebeuf when I first got here and I quickly fell in love with it,” Hampton said. “My daughter grew up there. She was with me every step of the way and I know she’s sad I won’t be there every day but I look forward to being a dad and still being part of the community at Brebeuf.”
