The Tamil Nadu government’s decision to permit six shows a day in theatres for newly released films has received a warm response from the Tamil film industry. Following the announcement of the new regulations, several production houses have taken to social media to thank Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and Minister Rajmohan for introducing the provision. Among them are Passion Studios and Vels Film International, with the latter backing Nayanthara’s upcoming film Mookuthi Amman 2.

The new regulations allow theatres across Tamil Nadu to screen up to six shows daily during the first week of a film’s theatrical release. The permitted screening window will extend from 6 am to 2.30 am the following day, providing exhibitors with greater flexibility in scheduling shows. The provisions can also be extended to weekends, state festive holidays and public holidays.

The announcement comes as a significant development for the Tamil film exhibition sector, particularly with several major releases lined up for the upcoming Diwali festivities. The makers of films scheduled to arrive in theatres on November 6 have already begun capitalising on the additional screening hours, with early morning shows opening for Suriya’s Scene, Nayanthara’s Mookuthi Amman 2 and Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana, directed by Nitesh Tiwari.

Passion Studios was among the first production houses to publicly acknowledge the government’s decision. Expressing its appreciation to Chief Minister Vijay, the production house described the move as a “progressive initiative”. It further noted that the new provisions “will enable greater flexibility in film programming and exhibition, creating valuable opportunities for films of all scales.”

The production house also extended its gratitude to Rajmohan, who serves as the Minister for Film Technology and Cinematograph Act in Tamil Nadu, for his role in the development.

Meanwhile, Vels Film International, which is producing Mookuthi Amman 2 under the leadership of Ishari K Ganesh, also shared a note acknowledging the government’s decision. The production banner thanked both the Chief Minister and the minister for introducing the extended screening provisions, highlighting how the move would benefit its upcoming release.

In a letter shared on social media, Vels Film International wrote, “On behalf of the team of Mookuthi Amman 2 – Mahasakthi, we wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Thiru C. Joseph Vijay sir and the Honourable Minister Thiru Rajmohan sir for permitting theatres to screen up to six shows a day and allowing the first show to commence as early as 6:00 am.”

The note further added, “Your decision is a significant encouragement to the Tamil film industry and a wonderful gesture towards cinema lovers. This progressive initiative has paved the way for Mookuthi Amman 2 to reach audiences across Tamil Nadu, enabling more people to experience and celebrate the film on the big screens. We sincerely appreciate your support and commitment to creating greater opportunities for Tamil cinema and its vibrant film industry.”

What does the new theatre screening order mean for Tamil cinema?

The latest order follows representations made by the Tamil Film Active Producers Association, Tamil Film Producers Council and Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association, all of which had approached the government seeking greater flexibility in theatre scheduling.

Until now, the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 1957, framed under the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Act, 1955, generally permitted theatres to conduct four shows a day. In May this year, the newly formed government introduced an additional special show on weekends, state festive holidays and public holidays.

The latest decision takes that relaxation further by allowing six daily screenings during the first week of a new film’s release. The extended schedule is expected to benefit both exhibitors and producers, particularly those handling big-ticket releases that traditionally witness considerable audience interest during their opening days.

For films arriving during the Diwali window, the provision could prove particularly useful. With multiple high-profile titles competing for screens and audience attention, additional show timings could help theatres accommodate more viewers while giving producers greater opportunities to maximise their theatrical reach.

The immediate response from production houses suggests that the industry has welcomed the move. With November 6 releases already opening 6 am screenings, the coming festive weekend will offer an early indication of how the revised regulations translate into theatrical footfalls across Tamil Nadu.
