Rylan Clark has a close relationship with Strictly, having spent four years presenting sister series It Takes Two, and now he’s shared his views on the new hosting line-up
Rylan Clark has revealed what he really thinks about the new hosts of Strictly Come Dancing after missing out on the role. Rylan has a close relationship with Strictly, having spent four years presenting sister series It Takes Two. Some might assume that would have made him a natural fit for the main show when Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman left last year.
In fact, he did audition for the role, taking part in so-called “chemistry tests” and saying they “went really well”. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be, and the job ultimately went to Emma Willis, Johannes Radebe and Josh Widdicombe.
But the new hosts faced teething problems and have proved divisive – particularly the switch to a three-person line-up. The Times’ Carol Midgley described them as “TV’s most awkward ménage à trois”.
Meanwhile, the Independent’s Isobel Lewis stated that comedian Josh “is a problem the show needs to solve”. Yet Rylan, who worked with Emma on Big Brother, doesn’t appear to take issue with the new format.
He told Heat magazine: “I worked there for four years, so I love the show to bits. The day that Emma Willis, my telly wife, got the job, we spoke, and I was just so over the moon for her – I still am.
“Josh Widdicombe, I think, is hilarious, and I’ve worked with him a few times on The Last Leg and at Radio 2. I think he’s doing a great job. I think Johannes Radebe is doing a fantastic job, too.
“It’s different, but just let everyone settle in, and by the end of the series, no one will be saying anything’s different.”
Rylan added that whoever took up the role could still face criticism because it’s a “different” format and people will have opinions, no matter what the change is, so “enjoy it”.
Rylan has also described the chemistry tests as being like “GCSE Strictly”.
He told Digital Spy there was a “little B&M sparkly cloth on a table”, and noted that the process was “really fun”.
He told the outlet: “Like this little B&M sparkly cloth on a table, it was like a GCSE production, but it was really fun, and the chemistry tests went great, so I know that they just wanted to go for what they’ve gone for.
“And I have seen a load of write-ups like, ‘Just how bad did Rylan’s chemistry tests go for him not to get the job?’ And I’m like, ‘It went really well, actually’.”
