Aren’t You Rama?’

For 7-year-old Yatharv, his dad Yash is a real-life superhero. So when he heard papa is playing Ravana in Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana: Part 1, his world shook. Having grown up on Ramayana stories from his grandparents, his first reaction was — “Aren’t you Rama?” Yash had to sit his son down for a serious father-son chat. “He viewed me as a hero and couldn’t process why I was portraying the antagonist. He was shocked and said, ‘You are the bad guy! How can you do that?’ I had to explain that while I am Rama in real life, I am just playing a character in the film,” the actor reveals.

And then came the cutest dilemma — whom to support? Yash told him, “When we listen to the story, everybody has to follow Rama. But in the movie, he could root for me.”

Yatharv’s next worry was that, “Do you die? Do you lose?” The thought of his father meeting Ravana’s tragic end was too much for the little one.

The real drama happened during an early screening. When Yatharv saw his dad as Ravana attacking Jatayu, he broke down in tears. So much so, he later scolded Yash, “I didn’t like you killing that bird even in the movie.”

For Yash, playing Ravana is a career-defining challenge. For his son, seeing his hero turn villain is the bigger challenge!
