George Pickens rumors: Ranking 6 landing spots for Cowboys WR at trade deadline or in free agency originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Dallas Cowboys decided to pay wide receiver George Pickens on a one-year franchise tag at the cost of $27.298 million for the 2026 NFL season. He’s given them little reason to reconsider signing him to a long-term extension.

Pickens remains a pending 2027 NFL free agent. After breaking out with 93 catches for 1,429 receiving yards and nine TDs last season in Dallas after coming over in a trade from Pittsburgh, Pickens has had a big production drop-off through the first half of ’26.
Through eight Cowboys games, Pickens has only 39 catches for 533 yards and two TDs. He’s on pace for 83 catches for 1,133 yards and four TDs. That’s still a pretty good season, but not worth (yet) giving him money close to top wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who averages $36 million per season on his current four-year, $36 million deal he signed in 2024.
Pickens becoming a free agent without being tagged again has created some rumors of a potential trade now ahead of a likely departure from Dallas next March. But what teams are the best fits to become Pickens’ third NFL team, now or later? Here’s a ranking of the juiciest suitors.

1. Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons have the best shot at acquiring Pickens before the Nov. 10 in-season trade deadline next Tuesday. They have ample cap space to pay what’s left on Pickens’ 2026 salary. They also need another downfield passing target to help Drake London, Kyle Pitts and Bijan Robinson in the passing game. They are seeing good signs from big-armed third-year QB Michael Penix Jr.
The Falcons, at 3-5, are also in playoff contention in the weak NFC South race. Pickens can help them finish ahead of the Panthers, Buccaneers and Saints in the end. Atlanta has a ton of cap space in the near future to also give Pickens a long-term deal, in which he would earn more than $30 million per season.

2. Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins may not be well positioned to buy at the trade deadline. That means the interest would be in beating other teams to the punch to sign Pickens. The key is the asking price, and Miami likely would be OK only giving up a second-round draft pick to Dallas. When there is no such compensation involved beyond the big money in NFL free agency, the Dolphins make a lot of sense for Pickens to attach to a young franchise QB they take in the first round.

Miami is taking a long look at several young receivers this season with Malik Willis at quarterback, but none of them profile like a No. 1 like Pickens does.

3. Los Angeles Rams
The Rams are seeing the breakdown of Davante Adams ahead of him turning 34 in December, as he is sidelined for up to three months with a hamstring injury. Los Angeles can get out of Adams’ contract next year, as he is also a pending free agent.
That would leave Matthew Stafford (likely returning for another season at QB) with a big void for a big playmaker to pair with Puka Nacua, who is up for a big contract extension next year. Given the aggressive nature of their all-in offseason with GM Les Snead, don’t put it past the Rams to go after Pickens now should they feel Adams’ chances of being effective in a return aren’t good.

The trick is how they might pay Nacua and Pickens at the same time. But for a team with still huge Super Bowl 61 hopes, they might be OK with “renting” Pickens for a half-season through the playoffs.

4. Las Vegas Raiders
The Raiders are another wide receiver-needy team with Tre Tucker as their best option to help tight end Brock Bowers this season. Although Kirk Cousins is still making it work with his current weapons, the Raiders need to be thinking more about the future with No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza.
It would be shocking if Mendoza isn’t the anointed starter in his second season. Las Vegas would be smart to gamble on Pickens’ big-play ability connecting well with Mendoza and playing well off Bowers. The Raiders would be more of a free-agent fit, unless John Spytek wants to build on his aggressive 2026 offseason soon.

5. Arizona Cardinals
The Cardinals like Michael Wilson as their top wide receiver playing off their star tight end, Trey McBride. But with Jacoby Brissett benched, Gardner Minshew playing the bridge and rookie Carson Beck as the No. 2, Arizona is fast-forwarding a little to the future of Mike LaFleur’s offense.
The question is, after the drama with Marvin Harrison Jr., another big speedy wide receiver with inconsistent mercurial tendencies, would the Cardinals want to risk that again and give up big money and draft capital to get Pickens? They will kick his tires should he hit the open market and might think he will come out flat for them in the same way.

6. Washington Commanders
The Commanders have seen Terry McLaurin go down with a devastating injury. They had to sign Stefon Diggs to give themselves some preseason help at wide receiver, but now Diggs has to be the default No. 1 the rest of the way for Jayden Daniels.

Washington is sitting pretty on cap space as Daniels is on his rookie contract. Much like the Falcons, despite a losing record (2-4-1), the Commanders should feel like they can still get into the playoffs through winning their own weak division, the NFC East.
Obviously, a Cowboys-Commanders trade between rivals would be odd, so this would be more about Washington targeting Pickens as a free agent to pair with a (hopefully) back-healthy McLaurin next season.
