Union home minister Amit Shah will lead the BJP’s ‘Loktantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao’ (Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy) padyatra in Haryana’s Karnal on Thursday as part of the party’s campaign to counter the Opposition’s allegations of ‘vote chori’ and questions over the functioning of the Election Commission.

Shah is scheduled to begin the march from Sector 12 at 10 am and proceed to Mahatma Gandhi Chowk, where he will address a public gathering.

The BJP has organised similar marches and rallies across several states to counter the Congress and other Opposition parties’ allegations concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Party leaders said the campaign was intended to counter what they described as attempts by Opposition parties to undermine public confidence in democratic institutions and electoral processes.

The Karnal district administration has made extensive security and traffic arrangements for the home minister’s visit.

Officials said seven superintendents of police, 16 deputy superintendents of police and 10 companies of Haryana Police had been deployed for security.

Traffic restrictions have also been announced on several major roads in Karnal to facilitate the march.

After the programme, Shah is scheduled to visit Ambala Cantonment to inaugurate a newly constructed memorial dedicated to the martyrs of the 1857 uprising. He will also address a gathering at Gandhi Ground.

The BJP’s statewide campaign is aimed at mobilising public support for its stand on electoral roll revision and countering the Opposition’s criticism of the Election Commission.
