University of Houston forward Chase McCarty suffered a sprained left knee in Monday’s season opener, coach Kelvin Sampson said Wednesday.

McCarty’s status is day-to-day. He will receive treatment for the rest of the week and is questionable for the No. 10 Cougars’ game Sunday against Cal in the Caesars Lake Tahoe Classic.

McCarty, a 6-foot-5 junior, was injured with about 12 minutes remaining in the game when a La Salle player fell into the back of his leg.

After the Cougars’ 94-55 win, coach Sampson said, “I don’t think it’s that bad” when asked about the injury.
