Star Miami wide receiver Malachi Toney is set to undergo surgery to address a high ankle sprain that will keep him off the field for weeks, according to multiple reports.

There is no timeline for his return, though a comeback from a high ankle sprain can typically take at least four weeks, ESPN reported Wednesday evening.

The Hurricanes football program revealed in a statement that Toney had suffered an ankle injury during practice on Wednesday morning and he would be “undergoing further evaluation by the team’s medical staff.”

There is still hope within the program that Toney could return before the regular season comes to an end, with Miami down to the final four games, starting with Notre Dame on Saturday, according to The Athletic.

The Hurricanes will close out the season with home games against Duke, Virginia Tech and Boston College.

The injury to one of Miami’s biggest pieces comes as the Hurricanes were ranked No. 1 in the first reveal of the College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday.

Toney has accounted for 35 percent of Miami’s receptions, 39 percent of its receiving yards and 46 percent of its touchdown catches during the 2026 season for a team that is leading the nation in scoring with 47.6 points per game.

The star wide receiver broke the school record for receiving yards in a game with 234 in the season opener against Stanford and broke the Miami record for receptions in a game with 16 against Pittsburgh.

Toney had been a Heisman hopeful this season with 73 catches for 1,027 yards and 13 touchdowns, while surpassing 100 all-purpose yards in six of eight of the Hurricanes’ games.

He had not missed any time on the field until this recent ankle issue.
