Chennai: The Madras High Court has expressed concern over the functioning of 14 universities in Tamil Nadu without a Vice-Chancellor or a syndicate for the past few years.

Hearing an application filed by a group of persons in connection with the disbursement of pension to those eligible in the Annamalai University, Justice N. Anand Venkatesh on Tuesday requested the Advocate General to list out the further course of action to be taken by the State government to restore normalcy in the functioning of the universities.

If the state government did not take immediate steps to set right the anomaly, it would directly impact higher education in Tamil Nadu. The situation has to be remedied, and the court had to necessarily take notice of the prevailing situation, the judge noted.

The universities are currently run by a convenor committee appointed by the government and headed by an IAS officer, the court said. It said the convenor committee could only be a temporary arrangement and it would be impossible for the committee to run and administer the university and colleges. The position is continuing for three to four years, and it would have a direct impact on the functioning of the educational institutions, the court observed.
