Are Director-Composer Combinations Ending In Tollywood?

The much-talked-about director-composer combinations in Tollywood appear to be heading for a break. Close on the heels of Sukumar announcing his next film with Ram Charan without mentioning his favourite composer Devi Sri Prasad, reports suggest that another popular combination, Trivikram Srinivas and S.S. Thaman could also be heading for a split.

“It is success that sustains a director-composer combination. At the same time, filmmakers want to explore new sounds and move away from a déjà vu feeling. That is why fresh combinations are emerging,” says a producer.

Sukumar and DSP have shared a successful musical journey, delivering chartbusters right from Arya, 100% Love, Rangasthalam and Pushpa. Songs like Oo Antava, Srivalli and Kissik have further strengthened their musical association. However, Sukumar’s next collaboration with Ram Charan has triggered speculation about a possible change of composer.

Interestingly, Mythri Movie Makers recently praised DSP’s immense talent and ability to rock Tollywood, while indicating that Sukumar would take a call on the composer for his next film.

Now, similar reports are doing the rounds about Trivikram Srinivas and Thaman parting ways. The duo delivered one of Telugu cinema’s biggest musical blockbusters with Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo. Songs like Butta Bomma, Ramuloo Ramulaa and Samajavaragamana became nationwide chartbusters and remain popular even today.

“Trivikram may explore other composers in his upcoming projects. There is a possibility of him collaborating with Tamil music directors like Anirudh Ravichander, especially for his next mythological entertainer. Filmmakers are constantly looking for fresh musical combinations to give their films a different appeal,” the producer concludes.
