Madurai: The Tamil Nadu government has made arrangements to ensure uninterrupted power supply across the State on Deepavali day, Energy Resources Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar said on Thursday.
Speaking to reporters after inaugurating a newly-constructed building at a government higher secondary school in Puliyankulam near Thiruparankundram in Madurai, he said the electricity department had been instructed to ensure that consumers did not face power cuts during the festival. Officials had been directed to conduct adequate inspections and avoid unnecessary power shutdowns. The public could lodge complaints in the event of any interruption in supply, he added.
On the arrest of former minister Anbil Mahesh, Nirmal Kumar maintained that the action had been initiated on the basis of evidence that money collected from educational institutions had been handed over to him. Alleging that the collections had continued for two years, he pointed out that complaints had been received from educational institutions. Investigators had documentary evidence, including a pen drive containing details of the alleged transactions, and the matter had also been placed before the court, he noted.
Regarding the proposed waiver of crop loans, the minister disclosed that discussions were under way among the ministers in accordance with the Chief Minister’s directions and that further action would be announced once the consultations were completed.
Further responding to the issue of rising prices of essential commodities, he maintained that the government was taking steps to contain the increase, including arranging supplies from other States.
On the political front, Nirmal Kumar predicted a poor performance by the DMK in the ensuing byelections and the next Assembly election, asserting that the TVK-led alliance would win 200 constituencies. He also maintained that the government was functioning with the full cooperation of its alliance partners.
