Description: She just made history as Los Angeles’ first South Asian mayor-elect! Kerala-born Nithya Raman defeated incumbent Karen Bass with 52.1% of the vote.
But her journey to this moment began thousands of miles away.
Born in Thrissur, Kerala, Nithya spent her early years in Thiruvananthapuram before moving to the US with her family at around six.
After graduating from Harvard in 2003, she returned to India to work with communities often left out of urban development plans.
In Delhi, she supported slum residents facing eviction ahead of the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
In Chennai, she founded Transparent Chennai, using data mapping to make civic issues in underserved neighbourhoods visible to policymakers.
After earning a master’s in urban planning from MIT, she moved to Los Angeles, working on housing and homelessness.
In 2020, she entered politics, winning a seat on LA’s City Council. She was re-elected in 2024.
Now, she is set to lead the city.
She once worked to make overlooked communities heard. Now, she has a city of millions listening. ❤️
