Dharwad: With the possibility of a severe water shortage in the coming months, Labour and Employment Minister and Dharwad district in-charge Santosh Lad has urged people to use water sparingly and warned officials that negligence in implementing measures to tackle the crisis could invite criminal action.

“People should use water judiciously and avoid wastage. It is difficult to predict how severe the drought situation could be in the coming days. The public must therefore be cautious in using water,” Lad said during the Karnataka Development Programme (KDP) meeting on Friday.

Lad said the government had begun preparations to deal with a possible water crisis after discussions with officials of various departments. Areas likely to face shortages had been identified, and the administration had decided on measures to be taken if the situation worsened.

Warning officials against laxity, Lad said plans drawn up to address water shortages must be implemented properly. “If there is negligence in the implementation or maintenance of these schemes, criminal cases will be initiated against the officials concerned,” he said.

He asked senior officers to review the work of their subordinates every day and assign clear responsibilities to each official. Those who failed to discharge their duties would face suspension, he said.
