Imagine you’re out at an event and someone you recognise casually gets up on stage to sing a few songs – that’s what happened recently to a crowd who were gobsmacked
It’s not everyday you wind up at an event and a familiar face just casually surprises you with their presence. Bumping into A-listers may seem like a rare occurrence, but it’s happened before with one woman catching Harry Styles during a sunset at the park.
On another occasion, Londoners were stunned when they clocked the legendary Arnold Schwarzenegger being escorted to his car. So it’s safe to say it happens, and when you least expect it. Well for our friends Down Under, they couldn’t believe their luck when a very familiar face stepped up on stage and starting belting out some nostalgic tunes from the early 2000s.

And when she did grab the microphone – it so happens everyone knew the words to her song! So who was it?
Melbourne-based DJ Emma Peters shared a clip of the incredible moment Ashanti rocked up to the Birdcage Oaks Day and performed her iconic track What’s Luv?, featuring Fat Joe.
She wrote in the caption: “Not Ashanti casually taking over the DJ booth at Oaks Day!”
Oaks Day is the third major race day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington Racecourse, and the Princess of R&B is currently Down Under for her Australia tour.
Since Emma posted the clip, it has attracted enormous attention from fans who were utterly starstruck by the whole affair. One fan wrote: “I’m screaming,” while another chimed in: “Queen Ashanti.”
A third simply declared: “Ashanti ICON!”
What is Ashanti doing now?
The singer and actress has had a stellar career. Having earned the title of the Princess of R&B, the 46-year-old is still well and truly involved in the world of music.
Currently she’s touring Australia and preparing to re-record her iconic 2002 debut album in order to own her masters. Ashanti, who tied the knot to Nelly in 2023, is also filming an upcoming reality TV series with the singer and their two-year-old son KK.
She has been working in the studio on new music, including a collaboration called “This lil game we play” with her hubby and Juicy J (produced by Jermaine Dupri) and her new solo material like “Falling for you”.
Ashanti became a global star following the 2002 release of her selt-titled debut album. She became the first female artist to simultaneously hold the top two spots on the Billboard Hot 100 with her single “Foolish” and Ja Rule’s “Always on Time”.
She went on to define the R&B-hip-hop crossover era of the early 2000s through major collaborations such as Fat Joe’s “What’s Luv?” – which she thrilled the Melbourne crowd with in the clip.
And her debut album earned her a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Album, alongside multiple Billboard and Soul Train Music Awards.
